How to wear a wallet chain correctly: Attachment, length and everyday use

Wallet Chain aus 304er Edelstahl von 304supply
In brief
  • Attached to the front belt loop, not the belt itself.
  • The lowest point ends at knee height, about 45 to 60 centimeters depending on body size.
  • On a bicycle, length is not a matter of taste, but of safety.

A wallet chain fits correctly if you don't notice it when walking, but immediately notice it when looking at it. This is less a matter of style and more a matter of three measurements.

Where it is attached

The usual point is the front belt loop on the side of the back pocket where the wallet is located. Not the loop next to it, not the belt itself: on the loop, the chain remains flexible when sitting; on the belt, it pulls.

If you don't carry a wallet, attach the other end in the front pocket. Then the chain is jewelry and not a safety rope — and can be shorter accordingly.

The right length

As a rule of thumb: the lowest point of the loop ends at knee height or just above. For normal men's trousers, this is about 45 to 60 centimeters, depending on body size.

Two things significantly shift the measurement. First, the waist height of the trousers: low-slung trousers need a shorter chain, otherwise it hangs too far. Second, the method of measurement. Our specifications are exclusive of carabiners — if you compare with a chain whose length is specified including the clasp, you will otherwise be missing two to three centimeters in your calculation.

How strong it should be

A thin chain on wide cargo pants disappears, a massive one on narrow pants looks like a tool. Proportion counts more than the appearance of a single link: the looser the fabric hangs, the stronger the chain can be.

What really bothers you in everyday life

Three things you only notice after a few days:

  • Driving. A chain that is too long gets caught between the seat and the seat belt buckle. Those who drive a lot tend to opt for the shorter end of the range.
  • Bicycle. The chain should never be so long that it reaches the saddle or the bottom bracket. This is the only point where length is not a matter of taste, but of safety.
  • Noise. A soft jingle is desired, rattling is not. If it rattles, the clasp is too loose or the chain is too long.

Try it out instead of calculating

Ultimately, your own trousers decide. Measure from the attachment point to the height where the chain should hang, and use this measurement — not your body height. If it still doesn't fit, you have a 14-day return policy.

All lengths are exclusive of carabiners, and you have a 14-day right of return.
