Does stainless steel tarnish? What differentiates 304 stainless steel from cheap jewelry

The short answer: no, if it's genuine 304 stainless steel. The long answer explains why so many chains and bracelets still become dull, green, or stained after a few weeks.

What "tarnishing" actually means

Tarnishing is a reaction of the surface with oxygen and sulfur compounds from air, sweat, and cosmetics. Silver tarnishes, brass tarnishes, copper tarnishes. Stainless steel does not — because chromium on the surface immediately forms a razor-thin oxide layer that prevents further penetration. This layer is invisible and regenerates itself after a scratch. It is called a passive layer.

Why so much jewelry still discolors

Because much of what is sold as "stainless steel" is only stainless steel on the outside. Three cases are common:

  • Coated: a base metal, usually brass or zinc, with a thin layer on top. It lasts until it wears through.
  • Lower alloy: 201 stainless steel has less nickel and more manganese. It is cheaper but corrodes significantly faster when exposed to sweat.
  • Mixed components: Chain made of stainless steel, clasp made of something else. If only the carabiner discolors, that's the reason.

How to recognize 304 stainless steel

Without a lab, there's no reliable test, but three useful clues:

  • The magnet. 304 is only weakly or not magnetic in its annealed state. If a magnet sticks firmly, it is more likely another alloy — an indication, not proof, because cold working can make 304 slightly magnetic.
  • The weight. Stainless steel is significantly heavier than coated zinc. Anyone who has held both will not confuse them.
  • The specification itself. Reputable suppliers state the alloy. If it just says "stainless steel" without a number, that's not a good sign.

Care: almost none

Warm water, a drop of dish soap, soft cloth, wipe dry. No silver polish, no ultrasound with zirconia stones, no abrasive pastes. That's it. If a piece of jewelry needs elaborate care, that says more about the material than about the owner.
